At least two people were killed and several others were injured when an Air Canada aircraft struck a vehicle on the runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York, US media report.
The accident occurred on Sunday around 11:40 p.m. local time, during the landing of a flight from Montreal. The aircraft then hit a Port Authority rescue vehicle, which was responding to another incident on the runway at the time.
According to NBC New York, the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the collision, while several people sustained injuries.
The flight was operated by the regional airline Jazz Aviation from Nova Scotia, on behalf of Air Canada, and a total of 76 passengers and crew members were on board the Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft, the Daily Mail reports.
Photos from the scene show the aircraft with a heavily damaged front section, while the vehicle was overturned onto its side after the collision. Emergency services were immediately deployed to the scene.
“Emergency protocols were immediately activated. Port Authority police are on site and cooperating with airlines and federal authorities,” officials said.
Due to the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily suspended all traffic at the airport, which was closed around 11:50 p.m.

The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the cause of the collision.
LaGuardia Airport had already warned of possible traffic disruptions due to poor weather conditions, given the rain that fell in New York that evening.
The incident occurred at a time when US airports are facing additional pressure due to funding issues and staff shortages, which has already caused long lines and operational delays.
