- Two men of Serbian nationality were arrested at Punta Cana International Airport, in La Altagracia province, when they intended to travel to Switzerland with 75 packages of cocaine – the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) announced on Tuesday.
The agency’s statement says that anti-narcotics agents, with the assistance of security agencies at the terminal, inspected the luggage of the two Serbian nationals after suspicious contents were detected in their suitcases on the scanner.
- By order of the acting prosecutor and in the presence of the two foreigners, aged 63 and 68, the suitcases were opened and inspected, and 75 packages of cocaine were found inside. An investigation was immediately launched to determine the identity of the persons involved in international drug trafficking – the statement said.
According to unofficial information reported by the media, it is suspected that the two Serbian nationals were “mules,” meaning that criminal clans had recruited them to transport the drugs.
During the arrest, four mobile phones, personal documents, money, and other evidence were also seized.
