Serbian-born Melisa Luburić Bin won today in the primary elections in the 8th congressional district in Illinois, and will represent the Democratic Party in November, where she will try to secure a seat in the U.S. Congress in Washington in a race against the Republican candidate.
Ms. Luburić Bin is the second Serbian woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress, and she has done so three times, making her the most successful woman of our origin in American politics. She spent six years in the House of Representatives, between 2005 and 2011, after which she withdrew from politics and devoted herself to her family and business.
After today’s victory, she issued the following statement:
“It was an honor to be your voice in Congress before, and I am deeply moved that you have once again placed your trust in me as your candidate for Illinois’s 8th district in the United States Congress. The voters have spoken, and tonight we begin the work necessary to take our democracy back into our own hands,” said Melisa Luburić Bin, adding:
“Our victory tonight is just another step toward the recovery of our country — rebuilding the ‘American Dream,’ restoring our American values and Constitution, and doing the real work so that everyone in this country has the opportunity for the future they deserve.”
A Serbian Times reporter recently had the opportunity to attend a reception organized by the politician of Serbian origin. On that occasion, we enjoyed homemade zeljanica and sirnica that she prepared for her guests, and also conducted an exclusive interview with her, which you can watch at the link below…
