The award at the “Hollywood Best Indie Films,” one of the most recognized for independent films, was the 14th in a row for the short experimental film “Pink City Film.” The director and actress, Serbian-German artist Mirijam Verena Jeremić, who received the award for best experimental film and acting in California, talks about the film for N1.
In this short film, Mirijam is the director, screenwriter, and actress, and as she told the N1 portal, in addition to the mentioned 14, the film also won three awards for the role of Natalie in her performance.
“Hollywood Best Indie Film Awards is one of the most famous independent (indie) festivals in the USA. The competition was extremely strong, so I am very happy with the double award. Although I really love Japanese and Korean films, series, and animations, Hollywood is the goal of every artist who deals with acting or film,” says Mirijam and emphasizes that she is happy because she received the news that her film is a semi-finalist in the “Tokyo Short Fest” in Japan.
According to her, the plot of the film is based on the series “Twin Peaks” by director David Lynch, which was filmed in the early 1990s.
“I literally grew up with that series, and I remember how I rushed home from school so I wouldn’t miss a single episode. So to speak, my short film is a homage to Twin Peaks. It turned out that three months after writing the script, my neighbor Melanie was murdered, who, moreover, looks similar to Laura Palmer, the victim from the series. That’s why I dedicated the film to Melanie,” says Mirijam.

Lynch is a very warm and pleasant person
“As I mentioned, I grew up with his work and his way of expression through image and tone. He is a very interesting artistic soul, and I briefly met him in Cologne in 2010 at an event organized for actors. I had the opportunity to talk to him, and I can say that he is a very pleasant and warm person,” said our interviewee.
In the media, the name Stojan was mentioned as the killer who hid in Spain for a while.
“I read that they convicted him, and I didn’t want to read any further about the killer because such a person doesn’t deserve any attention. I was always annoyed by the fact that they write and report about criminals and never about victims. Melanie’s life and the kind of person she was were much more important to me. She often traveled to Africa to help children there. You can find out all about it by looking at her Instagram profile. What shocked me the most was the fact that she unconsciously knew she would die that day, May 25, 2018. Her last photo on Instagram shows her on a forest path, shrugging her shoulders and arms as if she is going to fly, and the caption also talks about heaven, freedom, and light. She looks like a heavenly angel,” she says about her friend to whom she dedicated the film.
Mirijam Verena Jeremić is also the author of a provocative poster, which is not so unusual considering that after acting studies, she studied sculpture and art at the University of the Arts (UDK) in Berlin.
“I chose to paint the vulva because currently, the art that I create is part of a concept called “I am not your meat” which is critical of the patriarchal structures of our contemporary society,” she explains for the N1 portal.
During her life in Belgrade, Mirijam was part of the “Dah theater” troupe, which combines dance, theater, visual arts, and follows contemporary trends. Cooperation with Dijana Milošević, one of the founders of Dah theater, as she emphasizes, was extremely inspiring in every way.
“I learned so much from her, not just acting but also about how to express myself through voice and body in very unusual ways. These methods come mainly from Japan, namely from the traditional Kabuki theater. And here we are, back to Japan as an inspiration for my art, whether it is visual or dramatic,” she says.
When it comes to acting, Mirijam earns her “bread” mostly as an actress in the theater and most often plays in smaller troupes/theaters.
“I have also played for large houses like Volksbühne, but always for one season. Now, for the first time, it happened that I played for the same theater for two years. It is from the city of Cottbus, which still exists under its original name from former East Germany, “The alternative C.” I generally prefer to be attached to theaters for only one season so that I can also shoot,” says Mirijam.
According to plans, those shootings could very likely happen in Belgrade.
“When it comes to acting and exhibitions, I plan to be more in Belgrade. When I was at the “Street Movie Festival” in September because of the “Pink City film,” I felt a desire to be in Belgrade and shoot films and series. I will continue to live in Berlin, but I also want to be in Belgrade more often,” she adds.
Growing up in Belgrade and living in Berlin, Mirijam Verena Jeremić knows the similarities and differences between these two cities and the two countries.
“Berlin- Belgrade – Belgrade-Berlin. Both cities start with the letter “B,” so it sounds like a song. The difference is that the German mentality is completely different from ours. Although I am half-German, I don’t speak German at all because I grew up in Belgrade. But Berlin is full of people from different countries so they speak English a lot and I like that. In Berlin, I hang out with people from all over the world. That’s why Berlin is full of colors and smells, and it reminds me of Belgrade. Berlin would never be such a cool city without multiculturalism, and that’s all of us mixed and came from somewhere and stayed here to give Berlin a sound, color, richness, and diversity and to remind us of our hometown,” says the interlocutor of the N1 portal.
