According to the latest data from the Education Department, a third of the nearly 20,000 students attending special education in Austria are learning Arabic as their native language. Serbian comes in third place, spoken by 7% of students.
These data indicate the long-term consequences of the failed asylum policy and family reunification processes, especially when it comes to Syrian children who arrived in Vienna in the last months of 2023, writes the German Heute.
It is estimated that there are currently 19,700 children and young people classified as “special education”, including elementary, secondary, and special school students.

7% of students speak Serbian These are students who attend special education classes due to difficulties in learning the German language, and many of them come from migrant families.
At the beginning of the year, almost half of the school population, 45%, had the status of “special education” students, meaning they could not follow the lessons in German.
The analysis showed that the most students speak Arabic, followed by Turkish and Serbian. In Vienna, 13% of students state Turkish as their first language, while 7% of students speak Serbian.
