Not far from Ilok in Slavonia, there is a place called Šarengrad, with about 500 inhabitants. It was there, right in the snow, that two truck drivers from Niš got stuck, and they were given a warm welcome in the middle of a cold snowy evening.
“If you ever get stuck in the snow, I hope you get stuck in Šarengrad! Due to the snow in the Lovka pass, the police had to close the road from Šarengrad to Ilok for trucks tonight, and they don’t know if they will be able to open it during the night,” Dinka Juričić, a resident of Šarengrad who regularly shares stories from everyday life in a small Slavonian town on Facebook, posted on Monday evening.
According to her, that’s where the story begins, right there in the snow on the closed road.
“Since the shop in Šarengrad is open until 9 pm, two tired, starving, and half-frozen truck drivers (their heating broke down) managed to find something to eat. They ate it in the warm shop because we don’t have a restaurant in the village. My caring neighbor Krešimir made them a pot of tea and brought it to them. And Jaca called me from the shop and asked if I could host them for the night… I quickly lit a fire before Krešimir brought them,” Dinka continues.
She writes that the truck drivers’ names are Nikola and Milan, they are from Niš, and they were a day’s drive from home.
“They pulled their beds up to the fireplace and fell asleep like logs in five minutes. I love the big heart of Šarengrad, united when it comes to helping travelers in need,” said this woman.
Dinka added to her story this morning, saying that the “guys from Niš” left during the night, as soon as the road was cleared.
Snow and wind caused major traffic problems throughout Croatia. Some roads were closed due to landslides and snowdrifts, and heavy vehicles were banned on some sections on Monday evening.
