On Thursday, the first robotically assisted heart surgery – a minimally invasive coronary intervention – will be performed at the “Dedinje” Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases.
This is a pioneering procedure that represents the first surgery of its kind not only in the Republic of Serbia, but also in the Balkans and the wider region, and until now such interventions have been performed exclusively in Italy and Poland.
The operation will be carried out using a Microport Medbot robot, of Chinese manufacture, which is in clinical use in almost all countries of the world, with the exception of the United States of America.
This significant and revolutionary step forward in domestic medicine will be performed by cardiac surgeons of the “Dedinje” Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases, clin. asst. Dr. Miroslav Miličić and clin. asst. Dr. Bogdan Okiljević, under the expert supervision and mentorship of Prof. Dr. Piotr Suwalski, from the National Medical Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration of the Republic of Poland, the doctor with the highest number of performed robotically assisted cardiac surgery procedures in Europe.
Prof. Dr. Suwalski will be the key expert consultant for the “Dedinje” Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases in the process of full development and implementation of robotically assisted surgery in the future period.
The application of robotic surgery allows for less invasiveness, faster and easier postoperative recovery for patients, as well as greater precision and efficiency of surgical procedures.
The strategic goal of developing robotically assisted cardiac surgery is the introduction of the day surgery concept, which would create conditions for patients to be admitted and discharged on the same day after a performed cardiac surgery intervention.
