MEP Helmut Brandstätter, one of those in the delegation of the European Parliament that arrived in Serbia to assess the current situation, told N1 that he advocates for the Serbian people to be part of the EU, but that with the autocratic regime of Aleksandar Vučić, Serbia does not fit into the Union.
Commenting on yesterday’s talks with representatives of the authorities, the opposition, the media, the academic community, students, and civil society, he stated that his most important impression is that they must return, because they did not have enough time for all the talks, and that numerous topics remain for consideration.
“One of the more important things is that people said there is not one, but two Serbias that do not talk to each other; that is one of the bigger problems, and that is what both the opposition and the authorities told us,” Brandstätter told N1.
He also referred to reports in pro-regime media about the MEPs, where it was said that they should not come, that they are scum, which he assessed as bad.
He also stated that the opposition told them that because they are talking with MEPs, pro-government media will write that members of the opposition are servants of the EU.
He asked Vučić why he does not want to change the way he addresses them.
He also pointed out that they had, as he said, an “interesting meeting” with Foreign Minister Marko Đurić, whom he described as the opposite of Vučić.
