At first glance, it seems as though it was decorated precisely that way to spite the neighbors, but the first letters of those words form the abbreviation ZDS, which is actually the Ustasha greeting „Za dom spremni“ (Ready for the homeland).
Croatian media outlets that shared this footage and explained the meaning of the inscription on the house also report that the house is located in the Podvinje neighborhood of Slavonski Brod.
A series of similar scandals marked the past summer when a concert by Marko Perković Thompson—otherwise known for Ustasha songs—was held in Zagreb, where the gathered crowd shouted Ustasha greetings and a series of provocations directed at the Serbian people.
This time, the painful Ustasha cry under which thousands upon thousands of Serbs perished is once again awakening dread, especially ahead of the Christmas holidays which symbolize a time of peace.
The controversial Ustasha greeting and military cry were used by the Ustasha in emigration before the 1941 occupation, and from April 10, 1941, it became the official greeting in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH); it is considered the equivalent of the Nazi „Sieg Heil“ cry, and no one in Croatian history prior to the Ustasha used that greeting.
Ante Pavelić used that expression for the first time at the end of an article titled „Ustasha, destiny has ruled for us“ from 1932, written after the so-called Velebit Uprising, according to the Belgrade-based Telegraf.
After that, the expression became established in his letters and proclamations, eventually becoming the official greeting on all NDH documents, and even decisions regarding the deportation of innocent people to camps—from which most never emerged—ended with „Za dom spremni“ (ZDS).
The extent to which that greeting is identified with the Ustasha movement is perhaps best evidenced by the radio program of the Ustasha radio station „Velebit,“ which began broadcasting on April 4, 1941, on the frequency of Radio Florence, starting its broadcast with the text: „Ready for the homeland! Ready for the homeland! Ready for the homeland! This is the radio station of the main Ustasha Headquarters!“, Telegraf concludes.
