Following the end of Igor Kolaković’s tenure, Serbia’s men’s national volleyball team has appointed a foreign coach.
George Crețu, a 56-year-old Romanian, has been named the head coach of Serbia’s senior men’s national team. Crețu is currently the coach of Polish club SKRA Bełchatów, where Serbian players Miran Kujundžić and Pavle Perić play.
“First of all, it is a great honor for me to coach the Serbian national team! Being a head coach in such a strong sporting country as Serbia is truly very special for me, and I believe it would be for any coach in the world.
I know the players very well; at this level, we are all familiar with the details of every team. If my memory serves me correctly, in the past two years, I have faced Serbia four times (as the coach of Slovenia). However, I am less familiar with the younger players, but I will do my best to get to know them better.

My plan is to bring some new players into the team in specific positions and gradually integrate them into the squad. Together with the more experienced players, we will find the right path. I know this is a significant challenge, but that is precisely why I accepted it!” Crețu emphasized in his first statement to the Serbian Volleyball Federation’s website.
A former blocker for Dinamo Bucharest, German club Lohhof, and Austrian teams HotVolleys Vienna, Sokol Vienna, and Union Perchtoldsdorf, Crețu began his coaching career with the Austrian clubs where he once played. In the 2007/2008 season, he served as the head coach of Romania’s national team.
From 2014 to 2019, Crețu led Estonia’s national team, winning bronze at the 2018 FIVB Challenger Cup and two gold medals in the European League and Golden European League in 2016 and 2018, respectively.
