Theologian Blagoje Pantelić has, after months of waiting and hearings, received an indictment from the Church Court of the Serbian Orthodox Church seeking his expulsion from the church community.

Pantelić was among the few who, in recent times, spoke critically about the Serbian Orthodox Church’s approach to socio-political events, which put him in the crosshairs of the Church leadership and Patriarch Porfirije himself.

His hearing was first held last summer, and at the end of November, he received an indictment requesting his permanent exclusion from the church community.

“The prosecutor is seeking final exclusion from the church community; this is permanent excommunication. Or, as the Patriarch would say: anathema. If the Patriarch rules this way, then, for example, when I die, my family will not be able to bury me according to Orthodox customs, i.e., a priest will not be allowed to perform my funeral service,” Pantelić wrote on the social media platform X.

Previously, Pantelić faced threats for criticizing the reappointment of Deacon Dr. Dragan Radić to the position of regular professor at the Orthodox-Theological Faculty. Radić is the elder of the Church of Saint Sava and a close associate of Patriarch Porfirije, who is also the initiator and driving force behind the indictment against Pantelić.

The indictment is signed by Velibor Džomić, a priest who, after the enthronement of Metropolitan Joanikije, was transferred from Montenegro to Belgrade, where he quickly became one of the Patriarch’s closest associates.
