The Deputy Prime Minister of Croatia and Minister of Defense announced that the first conscripts will head to the barracks in Knin, Sinj, and Požega on March 9 this year.

Ivan Anušić said that the response to medical examinations prior to mandatory military training was 95 percent, with a pass rate of around 90 percent.

“In the coming days, invitations will be sent to candidates for future basic military training, and by the end of the month everything will be defined. We will know how many will invoke conscientious objection, who will seek another model of serving the homeland, and on March 9 those who choose military training will enter the barracks and we will begin basic military training,” Anušić said after seeing off the eighth contingent of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia to Hungary.

So far, the response to medical examinations has been 95 percent, with a pass rate of around 90 percent, the minister added when asked about the implementation of medical examinations for candidates who have already received calls for basic military training.

“These are expected figures. We conducted certain surveys, and our projections are that around 70 percent of young men will opt for TVO, which is an exceptionally high percentage and meets all our plans and projections that we set when we started the TVO project,” he said.

He emphasized that instructors are ready to take in young men and women who voluntarily apply for the two-month military training service and the start of TVO in all three barracks — Slunj, Knin, and Požega. At the same time, work is underway on arranging and expanding capacities in other barracks across the rest of Croatia — in Beli Manastir, Dugo Selo, Varaždin, Pula, and Benkovac, he said.

“That means we will gradually increase the number of those going to TVO, because this first year and the first generation will not be implemented at full capacity, as a large number will automatically receive postponements due to schooling and some other reasons. Then capacities will gradually be filled over some three to four, at most five years,” Anušić said, HRT reported.
