Holy Thursday is observed in remembrance of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ and the apostles. In some places, egg dyeing begins. In churches, the bells are tied, as they are a symbol of joy.
On Holy Thursday, four events are commemorated: the washing of the disciples’ feet, the Last Supper, the miraculous prayer, and the betrayal of the Son of God.
On this day, Christ returned to Jerusalem with His disciples. At the Last Supper, He established the Holy Sacrament of Communion, sharing bread and wine with the words that can still be heard during the Holy Liturgy today.
Then He washed His disciples’ feet, teaching them to serve one another. He spoke openly about His upcoming suffering. Judas’ betrayal followed, and from the Garden of Gethsemane, the soldiers took the Son of God.
On Holy Thursday, the Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great is served. In the evening, twelve passages from the Gospel about Christ’s suffering are read. In churches, the bells are tied, as they are a sign of joy.
They will ring again only on Easter. Until then, services are announced by wooden clappers.
The holiday is one of the days designated for believers to receive communion. This year, due to the epidemic, communion may be received at home, in agreement with a priest.
