Red Star Belgrade’s footballers were defeated away by Braga with a score of 2:0, in a very poor performance by Vladan Milojević’s team. Aside from the guests’ initial reaction, everything looked very bad in Portugal — once again, the defense appeared confused and failed to fulfill its task, raising the question of what the Serbian champion must change for advancement in the spring to remain a realistic dream.
Although Red Star started the match more offensively and had a chance through Nemanja Radonjić, whose shot was stopped by Lukáš Horníček, it seemed that after ten minutes the Belgrade team completely lost rhythm. Braga became more concrete and began to threaten. It was Radonjić who made a crucial mistake when he lost the ball about 40 meters from his own goal, opening a counterattack for the hosts. Uchen reacted poorly, Ricardo Horta set up Fran Navarro, who had the easy task of placing the ball into the net past the helpless Mateus.
A real twist occurred in the 33rd minute when Gustaf Lagerbielke committed a foul, and Marko Arnautović fell to the ground. After a few minutes, it became clear that he would not be able to continue the match. His teammates helped him off the pitch, and Bruno Duarte came in as his replacement. Arnautović had been struggling earlier after being stepped on by one of the defenders during a duel.
After that, Braga continued to dominate possession, with the game concentrated on Red Star’s half, while Bruno Duarte, Nemanja Radonjić, and Marko Arnautović had no ideas or solutions on the other side.
The second half initially brought little change. Despite being behind, Red Star’s offensive players failed to threaten their rivals. The Belgrade side played without ideas, perhaps showing their worst performance in the Europa League this season — and possibly of the entire season. Dorgeles took advantage of a perfect pass from Ricardo Horta and scored Braga’s second goal in the 72nd minute.
It seems that Red Star’s worst display of the season had to end with such a result — without ideas, without Marko Arnautović, without a game plan.
