Five farmers’ associations have announced a nationwide protest on November 1st in Serbia due to the government’s alleged failure to honor agreements and denials of rumored subsidy cuts.
The protest, scheduled for 9 AM, was called in response to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management’s refusal to deny reports of subsidy reductions from 17,000 dinars to 10,000 dinars. The associations questioned how farmers could trust future agreements if previous ones with the government were not fulfilled.
“We are forced to call all honest associations to a general protest,” the associations stated.
The announcement reminded that a cooperation agreement in agriculture, signed on July 22nd between the ministry and the five associations, explicitly outlined support measures with specific subsidy amounts and payment dates. The government had committed to these terms, and the farmers had reciprocated.

“Recent developments, including reports of some associations agreeing to lower payments during meetings with the ministry, would violate the officially signed document and cause immeasurable harm to farmers who have improved their production by sowing certified seeds. This would reward those with fictitious farms solely for obtaining subsidies and not engaging in agricultural production. The deadline for certified seeds at 17,000 dinars is the end of October, with realization by the end of 2024,” the farmers emphasized.
They added that the goal of signing the agreement was to improve the agricultural situation, assess the overall current situation, and pay the basic total subsidies of 35,000 dinars, as agreed upon in earlier meetings.
“Any reduction in payments for any measure mentioned in the agreement is a step backward and is not in the interest of farmers or the associations that have signed it,” the farmers concluded.
The statement was signed by the “Stig” Farmers’ Association from Požarevac, “Složni Pidikanci” from Bavanište, “Severni Banat” from Kikinda, the Šumadija and Pomoravlje Dairy Producers Association “Adrani”, and the “Brestovački ratar” Farmers’ Association from Banatski Brestovac.
