Demostat has published that salaries in education in the surrounding countries, in relation to the average earnings in the country, are best in Croatia, Hungary, and Romania, and worst in North Macedonia and Serbia.

When converted into euros for comparability, the average salary in Serbia in July of this year was 836 euros, while the basic or starting salary for teachers was 739 euros, or almost 100 euros lower.

Of the countries in the region in a similar situation, only teachers in North Macedonia have a similar situation, where the average salary is around 666 euros, while salaries in primary education are 545 euros and in secondary education 563 euros, not counting a bonus of 150 euros received in the summer months.

Even lower salaries than in Serbia are in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Srpska, but they are around the average earnings of employees. In the Federation, the average for August was around 690 euros, the salary of teachers in primary education is 650 euros, and of professors in secondary education 730 euros. In the RS, the average salary is around 730 euros, with starting salaries for teachers in primary education around 690 euros and for professors in secondary schools around 700 euros.

The average salary in Albania was 763 euros, the average for teachers in primary education is 736 euros, almost the same as in Serbia, while in secondary schools it is above the average, amounting to 811 euros.

In Bulgaria, the average salary is around 1,000 euros. Currently, the basic salary for teachers is around 920 euros, but there is a lot of talk about increases that should amount to about 15% from January next year.

Teachers in Montenegro, after a recent increase in salaries at the state level, with earnings of 862 euros, have barely exceeded, more precisely by one euro, the national average, although until recently the difference in favor of education was slightly higher.

In neighboring Romania, teachers can count on a starting salary of 1,295 euros, which is more than 270 euros above the average earnings of all employees, which in May this year amounted to 1,024 euros.

In Hungary, the average salary of all employees is around 1,100 euros, but the salaries of teachers are higher and range, depending on the teacher’s qualifications, from 1,383 to 2,828 euros.

The average salary in Croatia in August of this year was 1,349 euros, while the average salary of beginning teachers in primary education is 1,542 and in secondary school 1,559 euros. However, teachers can advance in their positions through four salary levels, so the most valuable ones will be able to count on 2,095 in primary, or 2,107 euros in secondary school over time.

In addition, workers in Croatian education received a vacation bonus of 300 euros at the end of June, and employees in schools in almost all countries in the region count on this income every year, except in Serbia and Montenegro where it is paid with the salary.

Salaries of Serbian teachers are not only lagging behind most neighboring countries but are significantly lower than the earnings that employees with the same level of education have in the public sector, Demostat stated.
