A memorial plaque was unveiled today in the village of Metlić near Šabac for soldier Željko Gligorić, who was killed in battle with Albanian terrorists in 1999.

The memorial to the fallen soldier was unveiled by Zoran Antić, State Secretary in the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, Brigadier General Goran Momčilović, Chief of Cabinet of the Minister of Defense, Aleksandar Pajić, Mayor of Šabac, and the brother of the fallen fighter, Boško Gligorić.

The clergy of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Krivaja consecrated the memorial plaque and served a memorial service for soldier Gligorić and the fallen fighters of the village of Metlić, the Ministry of Defense announced.

After the unveiling, wreaths and flowers were laid at the memorial plaque by a delegation from the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Army, led by Brigadier General Momčilović, as well as by State Secretary Antić, members of the Gligorić family, representatives of the City of Šabac, local self-government, embassies, and numerous associations that cherish the tradition of remembering the fighters who fell for the freedom of their homeland.

Željko Gligorić was born on December 30, 1977, in Šabac. He began his military service in 1998 in the 549th Motorized Brigade.

In a battle with Albanian terrorists on March 30, 1999, in the Orahovac region, he was seriously wounded and died the following day at the Niš Medical Center. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit in the Fields of Defense and Security, First Class.
