Rector Vladan Đokić addressed the gathered crowd at Slavija and, at the beginning of his speech, said that the citizens had gathered to “confirm unity.”
“Just as still water grinds the mountain, so does our non-violent struggle continue,” says Đokić.
As he stated, students and professors were subjected to detentions, arrests, and interrogations, but they still achieved “at least three almost impossible accomplishments.”
“The first is that unity is not an illusion, but a strength that overcomes divisions and manipulations. The second is that knowledge, dignity, and truth always prevail over lies and blackmail. The third – trust in the university has been restored, and we will not surrender it to those who would humiliate it,” said the rector.
The large protest, called by students, has been held since 6 PM at Slavija, and at the beginning of the program, the gathered paid tribute to the victims of the tragedy in Novi Sad with 16 minutes of silence.
This was followed by the intonation of the Serbian anthem and a series of speeches – by student representatives, Momčilo Trajković, and Professor Milo Lompar.
