Student Jovana from the ETF assessed for N1 yesterday during the walk that the student movement nevertheless has support similar to what it had in 1997. Maybe we don’t have a patriarch today who will stand before the cordon, but we certainly have high-quality, sincere and honest people who have recognized our struggle, she stated, adding that this is also evident from the fact that they were greeted by church bells during the walk. Student Sonja from the Faculty of Law also does not expect the patriarch in front of the students, but says the students know exactly who supports them. “We counted ourselves on December 28 (collecting signatures for the election database, author’s note) and that is only a fraction of the people who support us and who support our demand for calling extraordinary parliamentary elections,” she stated.

Jovana from the ETF, when asked by N1 if they lack the support that students had in 1997, says she believes they still have that support.

“The church is not reflected in and does not consist only of its top and head, the church is a community and consists of individuals who belong to it, and I believe that a good portion of them recognized our struggle. We could see the support of the church in every city, in every village, where church bells greeted us during our walks, we could see it in Studenica when they (monks) provided lodging for students from Novi Pazar, and we could also see it tonight when we received the image of Bishop Maksim, which was handed to the students. So I think that support exists. Maybe we don’t have a patriarch today who will stand before the cordon, but we certainly have high-quality, sincere and honest people who are part of our community and who will one day reach the right positions,” stated the student.

The aspiration of every authoritarian regime is, as she adds, to destroy knowledge and education and to destroy that part, in this case, of the youth that can oppose them. She also adds that knowledge and integrity are not based only on academic education and that it has been shown that people from all spheres of society have shown that the desire for knowledge and free thought has not been destroyed and that no one can destroy it, so “some are afraid” of that now.
