The owner of the nightclub where the fire broke out, Jacques Moretti, who was questioned by police on Friday, has been known to French authorities for some time, reports Le Parisien.
After the fire, which engulfed the nightclub on New Year’s Eve, the investigation focused on Moretti, reports RTS.
He and his wife Jessica were questioned yesterday in connection with the devastating fire, the Valais cantonal prosecutor’s office announced.
He told the media that inspections had been carried out at his venue three times over the past ten years and that everything in the club had been in compliance with regulations.
Moretti has previously been known to French police for cases of pimping about thirty years ago, and he was also sentenced to prison for serious criminal offenses in the Savoy region for fraud and kidnapping 20 years ago.
Evidence has also been included in the investigation suggesting that Moretti allegedly carried out a large part of the renovations himself.
Posts from 2015 found on his social media show him boasting about the works, and the photographs reveal that he installed cheap but extremely flammable insulation, the use of which is strictly prohibited in underground public spaces in Switzerland.
Survivors also testify that the only staircase leading out of the basement was extremely narrow. There are indications that Moretti further narrowed the staircase during the renovation in order to gain more space in the venue, which during the panic became a deadly trap.
First four victims identified
Swiss police announced that they have identified four victims of the fire at the disco in the Swiss ski resort of Kran Montana.
The first four victims were identified as two Swiss females aged 21 and 16, and two Swiss males aged 18 and 16, reports the BBC.
Their bodies have been returned to their families, Swiss police said.
More details, including their names, have not yet been released.
As stated, work on identifying the remaining victims continues.
