Vladica Mitić and Nikola Milovanović from Intervention Unit 92, together with Marko Mitić, commander at the District Prison in Belgrade, will set off on March 23 on a 480-kilometer humanitarian pilgrimage from Belgrade to the Ostrog Monastery. Their goal is clear – to raise funds for the treatment of sick children, Sofija Laković from Belgrade and Feđa Alković from Podgorica.

This is not the first time members of the Intervention Unit and the District Prison have taken part in such actions. Two years ago, they organized their first pilgrimage for Anastasija Zafirović from Belgrade, and then a second for Nemanja Ljutić. Each time, as they point out, they encountered enormous support from citizens across Serbia and Montenegro, as well as colleagues from various services.

  • I can proudly say that we are organizing this for the third time and that we are overjoyed to be setting out again. We organized the first pilgrimage for Anastasija Zafirović, then for Nemanja Ljutić, and now we are walking for Sofija and Feđa. Our goal is to raise as much money as possible for their treatment. At the prison administration level, we are continuously engaged in humanitarian work. We organize swimming for the Holy Cross, small-sided football, basketball and shooting tournaments, and all the money raised is donated for humanitarian purposes. Recently, we also donated baby equipment in Niš – Marko Mitić

Sofija’s father is also joining them

The third pilgrimage, which awaits them in March, will be, they say, especially emotional. In addition to them, Sofija’s father will join, as he expressed a desire to walk part of the journey with them. The plan is to cover around 35 kilometers per day over 13 days, making sure they reach their destination without injuries and in good health.

  • Two years ago, when my brother set off on the pilgrimage with his colleagues, I was thinking about joining them. Last year I did, and here I am again this year. It all started spontaneously, people began reaching out on their own and wanting to be part of this story. A chain reaction began. And this year, Sofija’s father will set off with us as well, he expressed the wish himself – Vladica Mitić

What Sofija and Feđa are suffering from

Sofija Laković suffers from cerebral palsy and requires expensive therapies, physical treatments and rehabilitation, while Feđa Alković is battling a brain tumor and is currently undergoing treatment abroad. The costs are enormous, and every dinar means a new chance. Their message is simple – humanity has no boundaries, and each of us can be part of someone’s fight for life.

  • Children who are battling illness are true heroes, as are their parents. They need financial assistance to be able to undergo all the therapies. As always, we will walk in fasting and prayer. We ask all good people who are able to help to join this action, because the treatment costs are enormous, and every form of support means a lot – says Marko Mitić.

The plan is to cover 35 kilometers per day

These young men say their mission is much more than a physical challenge. The journey of nearly 500 kilometers, through different weather conditions and demanding sections, is a symbol of perseverance and faith that together much can be achieved.

  • We are all members of certain police units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, we have that kind of continuity within the performance of our regular duties and tasks. We maintain continuity when it comes to training and physical preparedness. So there is no specific preparation deadline. Simply, it is a regular continuity in our work as well. The plan is to cover nearly 500 kilometers in 13 days, that is, about 35 kilometers per day. The most important thing for us is that we all reach Ostrog healthy and without injuries – Nikola Milovanović.
