At least 16 people died in hurricane Milton in Florida, officials confirmed for CBS. “Milton” left more than 3 million consumers without power on Thursday.

The extent of the damage is still being assessed, and the hurricane brought floods as well as tornadoes, which left devastation.

Hurricane “Milton” hit a large part of Florida, and thousands of National Guard units have already been deployed, assisted by units from other US states, and, among other things, are to ensure that 50,000 electricians can restore the power grid across Florida.

Parts of Florida are still recovering from Hurricane “Helena” which hit the Tampa Bay area and the Big Bend region in the northern part of the state two weeks ago.

Hurricane “Helena” claimed at least 230 lives in six US states. The hurricane weakened before it reached land and the storm surge was not as strong as that during Hurricane Helena, which hit several states in the southeastern US in late September.

Milton made landfall on Florida’s west coast last night as a Category 3 hurricane, on a scale of five, and maintained strong winds as it moved inland before reaching the Atlantic on Thursday morning.

More than 3.1 million households were left without power across Florida. Although it has left land, the hurricane continues to produce strong winds and heavy rain in central and eastern Florida, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Hurricane Milton was forecast to be one of the most destructive hurricanes in more than a century in Florida, US President Joe Biden warned on Wednesday. Two weeks ago, at least 237 people died in the southeastern US in the wake of Hurricane Helena, including at least 15 in Florida.
