The president of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel, assessed that a “hasty or unconditional admission to the European Union (EU) would currently not be in the interest of Serbia, Germany, or Europe.
“Accession would mean for Serbia that it would have to renounce a large part of its hard-won independence, while the economic and political advantages would not outweigh the risks,” Weidel said in an interview for the newspaper Politika.
According to her, Germany’s role in this region should be different – “we should be a reliable, sincere partner, bilaterally, pragmatically and on an equal footing.”
“Instead of raising false hopes or exerting pressure from Brussels, we should support Serbia in strengthening its own capacity through fair trade relations, investments, technology transfer and cultural exchange – without political tutelage,” Weidel emphasized.
She stated that “Serbia has the right to follow its own path, with or without the EU,” and that Germany should respect and support that right.
“It is particularly important that historical and contemporary challenges in the Balkans – including the issue of Kosovo – are not further aggravated by ideological demands of the EU. A stable and peaceful region requires realism, mutual respect and solutions that take into account the interests of all parties involved – not one-size-fits-all solutions from Brussels,” Weidel said.
