A member of the Serbian Army, M.V. from Niš, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Higher Court in Kraljevo for causing a traffic accident that resulted in the deaths of Danijel Lazović, his three children aged 10, 7, and one year old, and their neighbor Dijana.
The severe accident occurred on September 21 on the Kraljevo-Raška road when the accused, driving a “PASARS” vehicle under the influence of alcohol, veered into the opposite lane and collided with a car approaching from the opposite direction.
Oliver Madić, the lawyer for Mirjana Lazović, the sole survivor of the tragic accident who lost her husband and three children, told Blic that the main hearing was held on June 2, and the verdict was announced on Tuesday, June 3.
“M.V. was sentenced to 12 years in prison because, while driving under the influence of alcohol, he crossed into the other lane and collided with the car carrying the Lazović family and their neighbor,” the lawyer stated.
He added that the accused army driver and his defense attorney did not dispute guilt for the accident that killed five people, but the accused denied consuming alcohol that day.
“He is also charged with driving under the influence of 0.37 blood alcohol that day. The accused disputed consuming alcohol, claiming he had four beers the night before during dinner. However, experts determined that he consumed alcohol that day, as the effects of alcohol would have worn off if he had drunk it the night before. I believe the court accepted the experts’ opinion,” said lawyer Madić.
According to him, the soldiers were heading to the barracks that day to drop off military vehicles. During the drive, they took a break and stopped at a gas station where they bought beer.
“The gas station cameras where they took a break showed that the soldiers bought beer. They stated in their testimony that they bought it, but did not drink it while driving. The police did not find beer in the military vehicles during the investigation,” the lawyer claimed.
To reiterate, a severe traffic accident occurred on the Kraljevo-Raška main road on September 21, 2024, when a passenger car and a Serbian Army vehicle collided. The deceased in the accident were Danijel L. from Raška, also a member of the Serbian Army, his children aged 10, 7, and one year old, as well as their neighbor Dijana (27).
Danijel’s wife Mirjana was the only survivor.
