Russian forces last night carried out heavy strikes using ballistic missiles and drones on the port infrastructure of the city of Odesa. At least eight people were killed and 27 wounded.
Late in the evening of December 19, Russia attacked the port infrastructure of the Odesa region in southern Ukraine, killing at least eight people and injuring 27, the State Emergency Service reported.
“Last night, Russia carried out a missile strike on a port infrastructure facility in the Odesa region. Some of the victims were on a bus that found itself at the epicenter of the strike,” Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said in a post on Telegram.
During the attack, a fire also broke out among cargo trucks in a parking area within the port complex, said Odesa Regional Governor Oleh Kiper. Vehicles in the vicinity were also damaged in the Russian strike, the State Emergency Service later added.
Massive ballistic missile attack
Russian ballistic missiles “massively attacked” the port facility in the region, Kiper said late on December 19.
Emergency crews are on the scene, but their work is being hampered by continuous air-raid alerts, the governor added. Ukraine’s Air Force warned of the threat of Russian ballistic missiles at around 9 p.m. local time on December 19, and explosions were reported in the Odesa region just minutes later.
Odesa is a frequent target of attacks
The port infrastructure of the Odesa region is regularly targeted by Russian strikes. Recent attacks on the region caused multi-day power outages and left residents without water supplies.
On the night before the port attack, Russian drones struck transportation infrastructure in the region — damaging a bridge on the M15 highway (Odesa–Reni), prompting neighboring Moldova to close nearby border crossings.
Continued bombardment of the region
“The enemy continues to relentlessly bombard our region, but we are doing everything to ensure people’s safety and to maintain the functioning of transport and logistics,” Kiper said regarding the bridge attack.
Another attack on December 13 was described by Kiper as “one of the largest” nighttime attacks since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Russia has been attacking civilian energy and utility systems across Ukraine as part of a broader campaign aimed at critical infrastructure.
