A large number of anecdotes have been preserved about Branislav Nušić, thanks to his contemporaries, and above all, his son-in-law, Milivoje Predić, the husband of Nušić’s daughter Gita. He collected and published the book “Nušić in Stories” which remains the best testimony to this day of what a great Serbian writer he was.
And this Serbian writer, comedian, journalist, diplomat, amateur photographer and founder of rhetoric in Serbia, was a man of the sharp pen and even sharper language.
Thus, an anecdote says, Branislav Nušić once ended up in court. Why? Because, in the heat of an argument, he told some lady, forgotten today, that she was a cow.
The comedian paid the court fine, but he could not resist – as he was leaving the courtroom, he asked the judge:
“Mr. Judge, if I were to tell a cow that she is a lady, would I be punished then too?”
The judge, probably completely confused, told him that he would not.
Nušić then turned to the plaintiff and, as he was leaving the courtroom, tossed out:
“Goodbye, Madam.”
