Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic stated that, in a perfect scenario, the countries of the Balkans should unite, especially Serbia and Croatia.

Novak Djokovic gave an interview for GQ magazine in which he touched on several political topics, and in particular spoke about the relations between countries and peoples in the region.

Djokovic pointed out that, despite the differences, people in the Balkans share a common history, language, culture, and tradition.

– In my wildest dreams, I would say in a perfect scenario, why not? Why not? If we speak the same or very, very, very similar language, there are small differences between us, but we all understand each other perfectly. If you look at our national traditional uniforms, folk costumes, ethnic clothing, music, dance, food – it’s the same. Exactly the same. Just different words used to describe it. So, I’m more of an advocate for our gathering as much as possible – Djokovic replied to the question about the potential ‘unification’ of the countries in the Balkans – especially Serbia and Croatia.

Djokovic emphasized that his family, originally from Croatia, Montenegro, and Kosovo, teaches him the importance of respecting and understanding all the peoples in the region. He also spoke about his interest in linguistics and critically re-examining history, which, he says, often emphasizes differences rather than similarities between peoples.

– I have always had a very pacifistic approach in my attitude towards all people and nations in the region because we were once the same state. My mother’s family is originally from Croatia. She was born in Belgrade, but they are all Croats. My father’s side? Montenegro and Kosovo. I was born in Serbia. So I always treat everyone the same. I have such an approach that, if we were once together as one nation, we have so many cultural similarities, traditional similarities, language – why not focus on those things? – Djokovic said.
