Slowly but surely, Novak Djokovic is “treading” toward his 25th Grand Slam title. After Jakub Menšík withdrew due to injury, the Serbian tennis player qualified directly for the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, and at that stage of the competition, his rival will be Lorenzo Musetti.
Ahead of the clash with the Italian tennis player, which is scheduled for Wednesday, analyst Mats Wilander spoke about Djokovic’s chances in Melbourne. In a column for the French “L’Équipe,” he analyzed Novak’s game in the tournament so far, while also talking about the pressures the Serb faces in Australia.
Wilander claims that Novak does not care who he plays until the semifinals. Djokovic can compete against anyone, except for two tennis players who belong to the very top of the tennis elite.
“He is 38 years old, he is a bit slower than before, but he still plays incredibly well. He serves equally effectively, his forehand is powerful and, honestly, I cannot imagine that he will lose before the semifinals. It doesn’t matter to him who the opponent is, as long as that someone is not named Sinner or Alcaraz,” said Wilander.

Novak wants to take the pressure off himself before the end of the tournament.
“Novak has confidence against all of his potential opponents, except against those two. I am surprised that he says so often that they are the best in the world and that they are much better than him. Whether that is true or not, even if it is kind of him, he should not say it. He is probably trying to take the pressure off himself and make people forget that he is still a candidate for the biggest things. I don’t think it’s a strategy, it’s just his philosophy. He sees the world clearly. With him, it’s black or white,” he added.
So far, Novak has met Musetti 10 times on the ATP tour. The statistics are heavily on the side of Djokovic, who leads 9:1 in head-to-head duels, and the only time the Italian managed to surprise the Serb happened three years ago at the Monte Carlo Masters, when he celebrated after three sets (after a comeback).
