Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić stated today that there is no purge being carried out in the police, but rather one of many systematizations, so the new appointments are not political.
He added that the newly appointed officials are not expected to engage in political debates, but to lead their units.
“These are professionals in their fields. Personnel changes in the Ministry of Internal Affairs are a normal, routine activity,” Dačić told TV Pink, speaking about the appointment of Colonel Radoslav Repac as commander of the Gendarmerie and Igor Žmirać as commander of the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit.
Speaking about the protests, he said that the opposition wanted the police to take their side and help them come to power through a coup, but nothing came of it.
“No police unit has ever refused a single order, nor has any individual,” the police minister said.
He added that the police preserved social peace and stability, fulfilled all its tasks, and noted that “if it hadn’t been for them, Serbia would have been in a civil war.”
