The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad has ordered the police to identify the attackers who committed violence and beat citizens last night, during the protest in front of the Serbian National Theater (SNP) in Novi Sad, where a ceremony marking two centuries of Matica Srpska was held.
“Regarding the event of February 16, 2026, when during a protest in Novi Sad near the premises of the Serbian National Theater, violence and a physical confrontation against the participants of the gathering occurred, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad informs the public that the aforementioned event has been legally qualified as the criminal offense of Violent behavior at a sports event or public gathering under Article 344a of the Criminal Code,” the statement says, adding:
“The prosecution has ordered the police to identify all persons who participated in committing the violence without delay, regardless of who they are, as well as to take all measures and actions prescribed by law in order to collect and secure evidence for the prosecution of the responsible persons.”
The Public Prosecutor’s Office appeals for the respect of public order and peace and informs the public that any form of violence will be legally sanctioned, they state further.
As a reminder, unpleasant scenes were recorded last night when attackers in black began beating citizens and students who had gathered in front of the Serbian National Theater (SNP) in Novi Sad, where the ceremony marking two centuries of Matica Srpska was held.
