Pakistan carried out overnight air and ground strikes on targets belonging to the Taliban government in Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia, after Afghan forces allegedly launched what Islamabad described as “unprovoked attacks” on Pakistani military facilities along the border.

Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif stated that “the cup of patience has overflowed” and that the situation now represents an “open war” between the two countries, according to Reuters.

Pakistani security sources said the strikes targeted Taliban positions, headquarters, and ammunition depots across multiple sectors along the 2,600-kilometer border.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that airstrikes were carried out in parts of Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia.

Both sides reported heavy casualties, although conflicting figures could not be independently verified.

Pakistan claims that 133 Taliban fighters were killed and more than 200 wounded, with numerous strongholds destroyed or captured.

The Taliban, meanwhile, stated that 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed, while eight of their fighters and 13 civilians died in Nangarhar province.

Clashes reportedly erupted Thursday evening after Taliban forces launched what they described as retaliatory attacks on Pakistani military targets.

Both sides also claimed to have destroyed several border crossings during the fighting.

Tensions escalated following earlier Pakistani strikes which Islamabad said were aimed at camps belonging to Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and militants linked to Islamic State in eastern Afghanistan.

Authorities in Kabul rejected accusations that militants are allowed to operate from Afghan territory and announced a strong response.
