The Bureau for Social Research (BIRODI) assessed today that Radio-televizija Srbije (RTS) did not report adequately on the student protest in Valjevo, as only 18 seconds were devoted to that event in the central news program.
In its analysis of how the central news programs of television stations with national frequencies reported on yesterday’s protest in Valjevo, BIRODI stated that RTS aired a short report that did not include statements from participants or organizers.
“There was no live coverage from the event either, which resulted in the absence of context and pluralism of views,” the statement said.
It added that Pink television aired a significantly longer report on the gathering, but through “editorial framing based on discrediting and ideological labeling of protest participants.”
It was also stated that archival footage from various protests was used without a clear distinction of time, place, and context.
Hepi, B92 and Prva did not report on the protest.
“Despite different editorial approaches: minimal reporting, discrediting, or complete silence, the cumulative effect is the same. The public was deprived of complete, balanced, and timely information about an event of undeniable public interest,” BIRODI wrote in the statement.
The protest of high school and university students under the name “Valjevo pamti,” marking six months since the police brutality that occurred in that city, was held last night.
