Thanks to the kind-hearted people of Aleksandrovac, fifty-three-year-old Nenad Ivković, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, will have a better quality of life. In two years, in an action initiated through the Independent People’s Newspaper of the Rasina District, a million and two hundred thousand dinars were collected for the construction of an elevator to his apartment and a ramp.
There are 35 steps leading to Nenad’s apartment on the first floor of a residential building. Until this week, it was a difficult obstacle to overcome. He used to be able to go to the street by himself, but for the past eight years, only with the help of his wife, son, and mother.
“I used to drive and do everything, but then I broke my hip, had surgery on April 26, it will be eight years now. And since then, I can’t even get into a car or stand on my feet. It’s difficult. Now I can do everything myself, go down, go out, and walk. I can do everything perfectly now. To the store, to the pharmacy,” says Nenad Ivković from Aleksandrovac.
Thanks to the elevator, he can reach from the balcony to the street in less than two minutes. He just needs a little more routine as the elevator is automatic and equipped with sensors.
“He can go out to talk, to see his friends, to sit somewhere. Although the city, as a city, really doesn’t have any access for the disabled anywhere. He can’t go anywhere except the post office. He can’t go to the Health Center. Physical therapy is also on the second or third floor, which means a lot to him. We have to pay for physical therapy when he needs to do a little exercise,” says Mirjana Ivković, Nenad’s mother.
Nenad explains that about sixty people with disabilities face this problem. However, he is grateful for this to his friends and donors.
“The first thing was to make a project that wouldn’t bother anyone. For the residents of the building to give their consent, I am especially grateful to them, the Center for Social Work, the Municipal Administration, and especially our people from the Diaspora, businessmen who recognized the action and the need for Neša to be able to communicate with the outside world today,” emphasizes Boban Pribanović, the initiator of the action.
Ljiljana Radovanović, from the Center for Social Work in Aleksandrovac, emphasizes: “We are very happy that the action was successful at the city level and that the needs of people who have problems and need a better quality of life are increasingly recognized.”
And in order for people with disabilities to become more present in all spheres of life and more independent, say the kind-hearted people of Župa, it is necessary to start with basic norms of behavior. For starters, respect the ban on parking in spaces reserved for the disabled.
