American billionaire Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, posted a video on his profile featuring Jeffrey Sachs discussing the true reasons behind the war in Ukraine.
In the video, the renowned American economist and professor at Columbia University emphasizes that the war is not about Russian President Vladimir Putin attacking Ukraine in the way it is presented to the public every day.

“It goes back to the 1990s, when the U.S. Secretary of State promised Mikhail Gorbachev that NATO would not move an inch eastward if he recognized the reunification of Germany. Then the U.S. started to deceive. In 1994, Clinton signed a plan for NATO expansion all the way to Ukraine,” Sachs reminded viewers.
He then pointed out that in 1999, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic joined NATO, followed by the U.S. leading the bombing of Serbia.
“This was a clear use of NATO to bomb the capital of Europe, Belgrade, for 78 days in a row, in order to divide the country,” Sachs noted.
According to Sachs, Russian President Vladimir Putin even tried to be more pro-European and pro-American, questioning whether Russia should join NATO while still adhering to the principle of equal and shared relations.
Then came the terrorist attack on the U.S., followed by the war in Afghanistan, after which the Russians said they would help, understanding the war on terrorism, Sachs added.
“In 2022, the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty,” Sachs pointed out, emphasizing that this allowed America to deploy missile systems in Eastern Europe, which Russia perceived as a direct threat to its national security. As a result, Russia had to develop a strategy since these missile systems were only a few kilometers away from its border.
“In 2004 and 2005, we were involved in ‘soft regime changes’ in Ukraine, in what became known as the color revolution, but in 2009, Yanukovych won the elections in Ukraine on a policy of neutrality. By February 2022, the U.S. was actively involved in overthrowing Yanukovych,” Sachs said.
The U.S. then said, “Okay, now we’ll give them a new government,” and NATO said, “Now we’ll really expand.” However, Sachs continues, Putin told them, “Stop, you promised you wouldn’t expand eastward,” even though the military alliance had already expanded to include seven more countries.

“On December 15, 2021, Putin put a draft security agreement between Russia and the U.S. on the table, and the core of that agreement was no NATO expansion. Then the ‘special military operation’ began, and five days later, Zelensky said, ‘Okay, okay, neutrality,'” Sachs explained, before continuing:
“Then the U.S. and the U.K. said, ‘No way! Guys, keep fighting, we’ve got your back. We’re not on your front line, you’ll all die, but we’ve got your back.’ Over 600,000 people have died since Boris Johnson flew to Kyiv to tell them to be brave.”
This world-renowned professor reiterated that the war in Ukraine is not about what is served to us every day in the media.
“This is pure U.S. propaganda, we’re playing games here, and God forbid nuclear weapons come our way, but we were the first to take them to them,” Sachs concluded, referring to Russia.
