Alija Balijagić (65), suspected of double murder, broke into a house in the Grančarevo settlement near Bijelo Polje and slept there, a source from the Police Directorate told “Vijesti.”

According to the same information, the fugitive’s DNA profile was found in that house, and Montenegrin police have been searching for him for eight days. Investigators are determining the time Balijagić spent in that house.

As “Vijesti” reports, Alija Balijagić, a convicted rapist and robber who has spent almost four decades in prison, allegedly killed Jovan (60) and Milenka Madžgalj (69) in Sokolac on Friday, October 25, around 9:10 PM, and then fled.

A manhunt began that night, and the Montenegrin police were joined by the army the following day. Yesterday, Balijagić also alerted the Serbian police after being reported seen in the outskirts of Prijepolje.

From Grančarevo and the house where he is believed to have slept, Balijagić needed almost a day’s walk to the vicinity of Prijepolje where he was seen yesterday, according to an official statement by the Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia and Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić. The Minister of Internal Affairs of Montenegro, Danilo Šaranović, stated that he is in communication with his Serbian counterpart, Ivica Dačić, and that the police forces of Montenegro and Serbia are in continuous coordination and cooperation, making enormous efforts to apprehend Balijagić.

Dačić: Located near Prijepolje

The Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia and Minister of Internal Affairs of that country, Ivica Dačić, said that Alija Balijagić, who is being sought for a double murder in Bijelo Polje, has not yet been found, but that a detailed search of the area is underway.

“Yesterday, there was certain information from the field all day. It’s about Prijepolje and the border zone with Montenegro. In two places, a person was spotted who was reasonably suspected to be Balijagić. For two days we have been communicating with the police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro, cooperating with each other, considering the possibility that he can easily move from one side of the border to the other, because he knows the terrain, which is why we raised the level of readiness,” Dačić said in the morning news on RTS.

The first information came from hunters, who said they had met a man carrying a rifle who said he had lost his hunting dog, Dačić added.

“They think he looks like the man in the picture. Secondly, in the village of Ivezići near Prijepolje, which is a village towards the border, he visited a woman’s house, had two shots of brandy and left. She couldn’t even guess who he was, but she called her son, and he called the police. So those are two tracks that suggest that there is a high probability that he is located in those areas near Prijepolje. Then we raised not only the local police but also the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit and the Gendarmerie. They have been on the ground since last night, searching, all our capacities are currently engaged,” Dačić said.

He said that the presence of police officers has been increased on all lines of work and that “all possible techniques” and equipment of the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs are being used – drones, thermal imaging, tracking dogs… He also pointed out that the terrain is quite inaccessible and hilly and that there are many abandoned buildings and mountain pastures, but that a detailed search is being carried out. Dačić also said that he had spoken with his Montenegrin counterpart, Danilo Šaranović.
