The Consul General of the Republic of Serbia in New York, Dr. Vladimir Božović, at the invitation of the Mayor of New York, Eric Adams, attended a reception on the occasion of the Eastern European Cultural Heritage Day, held at Gracie’s Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor of New York since 1942.

The reception gathered high representatives of the diplomatic corps, consuls general, representatives of the city administration and numerous personalities from public and cultural life. The guests enjoyed a rich selection of specialties from Eastern European countries, and one of the partners of the event was the prestigious New York institution Russian Samovar, which completed the evening with a special gastronomic experience. The atmosphere was enriched by a carefully selected music program, which gave the entire event a special note of sophistication.

During the reception, Mayor Adams extended a special greeting to all consuls general and arranged a joint photo shoot. Thanks to the special relationship and mutual respect he has developed with Consul General Dr. Vladimir Božović, the mayor set aside special time within the reception to have a meaningful and constructive conversation with him. This segment of the event was dedicated exclusively to the further improvement of cooperation between the Consulate General and the City of New York, as well as the exchange of views on key initiatives of mutual importance.

Dr. Božović informed the mayor in detail about the results of the meeting with the Commissioner for International Affairs of the City of New York, Aissata Camara and her team, conveyed all the key initiatives that the Consulate presented, with a special emphasis on the initiative to erect a monument to Nikola Tesla in Manhattan.

On that occasion, Consul General Božović expressed his gratitude to Mayor Adams for the continuous support he provides to the Consulate of the Republic of Serbia, and especially for the historical act of raising the flag of the Republic of Serbia for the first time in New York in 2024, and then in 2025, as well as for the proclamation of Serbian-American Heritage Day, which represents a significant contribution to the visibility of the Serbian community in the city.

Mayor Adams greeted the initiative to erect a monument to Nikola Tesla with special enthusiasm, emphasizing that his character and work deserve a dignified and permanent place in the cultural and historical landscape of New York – the city where Tesla created and left a deep and lasting mark. On that occasion, the mayor expressed the desire that this important project be realized within his mandate, supported the priorities that the Consulate set for the current year and emphasized that the values and mission of the Consulate fully coincide with the mission of the City of New York.

In a cordial conversation with Consul General Dr. Vladimir Božović, the mayor emphasized the importance of continuous support and close cooperation with the Consulate, emphasizing that precisely such meetings represent a bridge between the local administration and the diplomatic community.

This meeting represents an exceptional example of successful cooperation, which contributes not only to strengthening cultural and historical ties, but also to improving understanding and solidarity among different communities in New York. The event is a confirmation of the importance of Eastern European cultural heritage, which the Consulate affirms, emphasizing its contribution to the cultural mosaic of the city and the values that the countries of the region share with the United States of America.
