Croatian President Zoran Milanovic today, after the opening of the Money Motion 2026 conference at the Zagreb Fair, gave a statement to the media in which he commented on a series of current political topics.

He was very critical toward the security policy of the European Union.

“Europe is a pack of house cats, each will go its own way, they are not wolves,” he described vividly. As an example, he cited German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who “only smiled while Trump criticized Spain.”

He called the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, a “clerk” about whom he said: “For me, she has no authority.”

He concluded that the “security situation and power grabs have changed.”

He also believes that Croatia, as a state with a special “historical identity,” cannot conduct a common foreign policy with countries like Estonia or Portugal.

“That is out of one’s mind,” he stated.

Speaking about military service and the state of the Armed Forces, Milanovic assessed that they are “very small” and that Croatia has failed to attract a sufficient number of people to fill them according to the standards agreed upon with NATO.

Conversation with the Israeli Ambassador

Milanovic also commented on the call for a conversation with the Israeli ambassador.

“We don’t need other people’s infections and bacilli,” he said, referring to the ambassador’s statements about Iran. He emphasized that it must be clarified whether one is talking about a “terrorist den” or a “country with which we have diplomatic relations and which is a member of the UN.”

“He should leave that harassment and those nastinesses back where they came from,” he said.

Regarding Iran, he said it has its own Constitution and institutions and added that “like Israel, they are prone to terrorism.” However, he added that it is not known to him that Iran “acts terroristically in Europe,” noting that terrorism in Europe is Sunni, not Shiite.

In the end, he repeated his stance that Croatian soldiers should withdraw from war-torn areas in the Middle East.
