Graz Mayor Elke Kar announced the latest information – 10 people died in the school shooting in that city. She previously stated that seven students and one teacher were killed, as well as the attacker who committed suicide. It is still unknown whether the 10th victim is a teacher or a student.

Local media report that at least 10 people were wounded in the shooting, which began around 10 AM, and that the attacker, also a student, shot in two classrooms.

Police in Graz confirmed around 1 PM that the perpetrator was among the dead.

Austrian Interior Minister Gerard Karner is also en route to the school.

The Austrian Ministry of Interior confirmed the fatalities, telling CNN that the victims included children aged 14 to 18.

According to police spokesperson Fritz Grundig, the perpetrator likely committed suicide, ORF reports.

The Profil portal reported that the perpetrator opened fire during an oral matriculation exam at the school.

It added that the perpetrator believed he was a victim of bullying, and was allegedly found dead in one of the toilets.

A large number of police units are on site, and the school building has been evacuated.

A police helicopter is circling the school, and police previously warned the public not to approach the school.

The school has been secured, the ministry and Austrian police announced.

Police stated that they deployed their special unit Cobra, which deals with attacks and hostage situations, along with their regular intervention teams, to the scene of the shooting.

It is reported that an emergency warning was issued for local hospitals, and wounded students were treated in a nearby concert hall.

Gun violence is rare in Austria, as in most Central European countries.

According to data from the local institute, the firearm homicide rate in Austria was only 0.1 per 100,000 people in 2021, compared to 4.5 per 100,000 people in the United States.

Austrian police stated that the shooting occurred at a federal higher secondary school center on Dreierschützengasse street, in the northwest of the city of Graz, not far from the main train station.

Graz is the second-largest city in Austria and is about 200 km from the capital city of Vienna.
