A major police manhunt is underway in Vienna for an allegedly Serbian attacker, who killed one Chechen in a Turkish restaurant in Vienna and seriously wounded another.
A shooting occurred in a bar in the Viennese district of Ottakring on Thursday evening. The attack happened in the Veronikagasse/Peyergasse area – a major manhunt was carried out overnight, Blic reports.
According to initial information published by the newspaper “Krone”, the shooting took place in a Turkish restaurant. Two Chechens were wounded – one sustained serious, life-threatening injuries, while the other, who was allegedly shot in the stomach, died.
What is known about the attacker
Compatriots of the victims stated that the attacker could be of Serbian origin. Investigators, however, stated that he is most likely an Austrian citizen with a migrant background.
It is believed that an argument preceded the incident, during which one person pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at his two rivals. The attacker and his companion then fled the scene.
When the conflict happened
The conflict occurred around 9:45 PM in Peyergasse. One of the victims died at the scene. The motive for the crime is currently unknown. The investigation was taken over by the Provincial Criminal Police Office of Vienna (Landeskriminalamt Wien).
As a precaution, a wide area around the bar was blocked off. A large search was launched covering several Viennese districts. According to the newspaper “Krone”, which was on the scene until 0:40 AM, the police operation was still ongoing at that time.
Just one day earlier, bloody scenes occurred in Ottakring – a 54-year-old bar owner was attacked and wounded in front of his establishment when four young men suddenly assaulted him.
