The aircraft carrying the captured President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, landed at Stewart National Guard Base in New York following an extensive operation by U.S. forces in Caracas.

Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores were pulled from their bedroom during the night in an operation carried out by the U.S. military. Maduro is expected to face charges of drug and arms trafficking before a federal court in Manhattan as early as next week.

Fingerprints and photographs, then prison uniforms

Immediately after landing, the process of taking fingerprints, photographs, and conducting medical examinations began. Cilia Flores was held longer in the hangar for additional medical checks.

The couple will be transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), a detention facility in New York. According to analysts, they will be treated as prisoners under “Special Administrative Measures” (SAMs), which entail high security and likely isolation.

Experts point out that this will be a huge shock for Maduro, who lived in luxury, while the MDC is a prison often criticized for poor conditions and a lack of adequate medical care.

Trump’s plan: Energy and security

President Donald Trump laid out a sharp vision for the future of Venezuela:

Interim administration: The United States will practically “run the country” until a “reasonable transition” is carried out.

Oil reserves: Trump announced the takeover of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves. The plan is to engage American companies to restore the devastated industry, while the U.S. military would be responsible for securing the oil fields.

Political uncertainty: Divisions and reactions

The situation in Venezuela and around the world is tense:

Opposition: Opposition leader María Corina Machado (Nobel Peace Prize laureate) is calling for the takeover of power, claiming that Edmundo González won the 2024 elections with 67% of the vote.

Trump’s doubt: Surprisingly, Trump stated that he does not believe Machado has the necessary support or respect to lead the country.

Diplomatic activity: Vice President Delcy Rodríguez is demanding Maduro’s release, while countries such as Argentina, Paraguay, and France are expressing support for the “restoration of the will of the people.”
