Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has declared a state of emergency, the government of that country announced.
According to the Venezuelan government, the attacks occurred in the states of Caracas, Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, and the targets allegedly included military facilities.
The Venezuelan government called on all social and political forces to activate mobilization plans.
At least seven explosions were recorded early this morning in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, and citizens report explosions heard from several military facilities and from the airport.
Residents reported aircraft flying over Caracas and power outages in various parts of the city.
According to the first photos from the streets of Caracas, numerous members of the military can be seen deployed in the streets, and heavy security has been placed around the presidential palace in the Venezuelan capital.
Venezuela claims that U.S. strikes are aimed at seizing Venezuelan oil and minerals. The Venezuelan government said it “condemns” U.S. “military aggression,” Sky News reports.
“Such aggression threatens international peace and stability, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean, and seriously endangers the lives of millions of people,” the statement said.
Today’s incidents come just a day after Venezuela announced that it was open to negotiations on an agreement with the United States to combat drug trafficking.
U.S. forces have been carrying out strikes since September on vessels they claim originate from Venezuela and are transporting narcotics.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro accuses Washington of wanting to carry out a change of government in Venezuela and gain access to its vast oil reserves through a months-long pressure campaign that began with the massive deployment of military forces in the Caribbean Sea in August.
