The MDC is one of the few detention centers in the United States with the capacity to hold high-security defendants
President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores arrived at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York, after being arrested during a U.S. military operation in Caracas.
The couple was transported from Venezuela aboard the warship USS Iwo Jima and then flown to the United States.
The detention status of Maduro’s wife is still not known.

The MDC is one of the few detention centers in the United States with the capacity to hold defendants requiring a high level of security.
It is known for housing other high-profile defendants such as Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, mafia leader Luigi Mangione, rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Ghislaine Maxwell, the partner of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who is charged for her role in organizing the sexual abuse of minors.
The indictment filed against Maduro and his family in the Southern District of New York charges him with conspiracy related to narco-terrorism, the importation of cocaine, as well as possession of weapons and explosives.
The charges are similar to those from 2020.
Prosecutors claim that Maduro and his associates abused their power to import cocaine into the United States and that he partnered with the Colombian guerrilla group FARC in drug trafficking.
Flores is also charged with participating in her husband’s crimes, including receiving bribes from drug traffickers.
The charges against them come after the U.S. government previously filed indictments against Venezuelan officials, including Néstor Reverol Torres, director of Venezuela’s National Anti-Drug Office.
President Trump said that the United States would “temporarily govern Venezuela,” using its vast oil reserves to sell to other countries.
