Nicolas Maduro Guerra, the son of the arrested Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro, said that his father sent a message from a prison cell in the United States stating that he and his wife Cilia Flores, who is being held in the same detention facility in New York, are “well” and that they are “fighters.”
“We are well. We are fighters. Do not be sad,” Nicolas Maduro Guerra conveyed his father’s words in a video released by the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, stating that the message was relayed to him by Maduro’s lawyers, reports “Figaro.”
Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores were taken out of Venezuela on January 3 in a military operation by U.S. special forces, after which they were arrested and placed in a detention facility in New York. Their trial on charges of involvement in illegal drug and arms trafficking began in that city on January 5, at which both pleaded not guilty.
Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez said that she “will not calm down for a single minute until they bring the president back,” and that they will “rescue” him.
U.S. President Donald Trump said after Maduro’s capture that he had “canceled” a new U.S. attack on Venezuela due to Caracas’ “cooperation,” and that Washington intends to “dictate” all decisions, while Venezuela responded that it is neither “subordinate nor obedient” to Washington.
The U.S. State Department yesterday urged citizens of that country not to travel to Venezuela, and those already there to “immediately leave the country” due to the “unstable” security situation.
The reason cited for such a call was the presence of armed militias known as “colectivos,” which set up roadblocks and search vehicles looking for evidence of U.S. citizenship or support for the United States.
