President of the United States Donald Trump will undoubtedly enter world history if Greenland joins the United States, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today at a briefing for journalists, commenting on Trump’s statements regarding Greenland.
“Here we can probably set aside whether this is good or bad, whether it is in line with the parameters of international law or not. But there are international experts who believe that, by realizing the issue of the annexation of Greenland, Trump would undoubtedly enter history. Not only the history of the United States, but also world history. It is hard not to agree with these experts,” the Kremlin spokesman said, TASS agency reports.
Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire for Greenland to become part of the United States, and during his first term he proposed that America buy Greenland.
In March 2025, he expressed confidence that Greenland could be annexed, and on January 17 Trump announced in a post on his social network TruthSocial that the United States would begin introducing tariffs of 10 percent on the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, France, and Sweden, which will remain in force until all parties reach agreement “on the full and complete American acquisition of Greenland.”
This Trump decision comes into effect on February 1, and on June 1 the tariff rate will increase to 25 percent.
The U.S. president stated that possession of the island is necessary to strengthen U.S. national security and the effective deployment of the American missile defense system, the Golden Dome.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, and Washington and Copenhagen in 1951, in addition to their obligations within the NATO alliance, signed a separate agreement on the defense of Greenland, under which the United States committed to defending this Arctic island from possible aggression.
