Crvena Zvezda’s footballers were defeated by Porto away with a score of 2:1 in the Round 2 match of the Europa League group stage.
The opening goal for Porto was scored by William Gomes from the penalty spot in the 8th minute.
Young Vasilije Kostov equalized with a fantastic volley in the 33rd minute.
The winning goal for Porto was scored by Mora in the 89th minute.
After the second round, Zvezda remained on one point, while Porto, with another victory, recorded six points.
In the next round, Zvezda will again play in Portugal, this time against Braga.
The Red and Whites were left with great regret after this match, as they matched their favored rival excellently and even had chances to win.
Porto took the lead in the 8th minute. Completely unnecessarily and carelessly, Učena brought down Porto’s striker, and a penalty was awarded to the hosts.
He fouled Gil and received a yellow card. William Gomes made no mistake. Mateus went one way, the ball the other.
After conceding the opening goal, Zvezda played more offensively, and the best chance was missed by Ivanić. After a cross from Radonjić, he headed the ball over the goal. Zvezda’s improved play was crowned by a brilliant goal from young Kostov in the 33rd minute.
Handel took a free kick, the ball bounced into Kostov’s path, and he struck a superb volley, sending it into the net.
Zvezda continued to attack, creating a few dangerous chances in front of Porto’s goal, and the first half ended 1:1.
The second half saw open play on both sides, with both teams pushing for victory.
Porto, who entered the match as the heavy favorite, increased the pressure, while the Red and Whites held firm.
Zvezda looked to counter, and Duarte missed a golden opportunity for a complete turnaround in the 88th minute.
The punishment came just a minute later. Zvezda’s defense collapsed, Seol was late to get back, a lightning counterattack unfolded, and Mora calmly beat Mateus.
