The informal group of judges and prosecutors “Defense of the Profession” has demanded that Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić resign, because he is not fulfilling his duties, “but instead acts in an interest-driven, selective, and unprofessional manner, to the detriment of the judicial system and the rule of law.”
In its request, this informal group listed a number of situations in which he failed to react; to demands from the public, statements by President of the state Aleksandar Vučić, inadmissible media publications, and other cases, but that he “had time and considered it appropriate to participate in a Christmas ‘celebration’ on the television station ‘Informer,’ even though the owner of that media outlet, Dragan J. Vučićević, is a party to numerous court proceedings.”
They also stated that “among the guests were individuals who are former convicts for the most serious criminal offenses or suspects of serious abuses of official position, which justifiably raises the question of whether the Minister of Justice is in a conflict of interest.”
Among the cases in which he failed to react, they cited “absolutely inadmissible media publications and reports in which journalists and employees of certain media outlets, among whom employees of the daily newspaper and television ‘Informer’ were particularly prominent, inappropriately commented on court decisions, attributed street slang terms to holders of judicial office, and often published data from their private lives, including phone numbers and photographs.”
“He did not respond to numerous, justified requests from the professional and broader public to state and explain the reasons for which he initiated the procedure of pardoning from criminal prosecution, on the basis of which the President of the Republic, derogating judicial authority, pardoned individuals against whom criminal proceedings were at that moment being conducted before the Basic Court in Novi Sad for causing serious bodily injury to a female student, as well as Milica Stojanović, who struck a female student with a vehicle during peaceful protests,” the request states.
He also failed to react regarding “numerous and continuous statements by the highest representatives of the executive власти, especially the President of the Republic, the former prime minister, and certain ministers, by which judges and prosecutors are labeled as ‘foreign mercenaries,’ ‘a renegade part of the judiciary that has broken away from the executive authority,’ ‘traitors,’ and ‘unpatriotic,’ thereby grossly undermining public trust in the judicial system.”
Nor did he react when “the car of the prosecutor of the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Subotica, Aleksandra Stojisavljević, was set on fire in front of her place of residence; when representatives of the ‘Informer’ editorial office waited in front of the workplace of Judge of the First Basic Court in Belgrade Tatjana Bezmarević Janjić because of a decision they did not like; nor when the police, allegedly for ‘security reasons,’ did not allow prosecutor of the First Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade Gordana Nedić Isailović to conduct an on-site inspection” in Ćacilend.
It was also stated that he did not react during the adoption of a lex specialis for the General Staff building, nor to the proposal of MP Uglješa Mrdić for the “amendment of important judicial laws, under an urgent procedure, without public debate, with the obvious goal of limiting the independence of the prosecution and the independence of the judiciary.”
They also emphasized that he “actively participated in blocking the work of the High Prosecutorial Council, especially after the elections for members of the High Prosecutorial Council were conducted, when Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić and members of the current composition close to him abused their positions by undermining the electoral process, clearly with the aim of repeating the elections whose results they were not satisfied with.”
