Josip Joška Broz, the grandson of the former President of the SFRY Josip Broz Tito and a member of the Main Board of the Socialist Party of Serbia, has died at the age of 78.

The news of his death was announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dačić.

“It was with disbelief that I received the news that my comrade and friend Joška Broz, the grandson of the former President of the SFRY Tito and a member of the Main Board of the Socialist Party of Serbia, left us tonight.

With him goes a part of an era, and it becomes the obligation of younger generations to preserve his memory! In the photo are he and I with Tara Gandhi. Sincere condolences to his family and all followers of Tito’s time and politics,” Dačić posted on Instagram.

Joška Broz was a politician and former Member of Parliament. He was the president of the Communist Party and the former president of the “Josip Broz Tito” citizens’ association, which he founded in 2005. He was the grandson of Josip Broz Tito, the former lifelong president of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the League of Communists of Yugoslavia.

He was born in Belgrade in 1947. He was three years old when his parents, Žarko Broz and Tamara Veger, divorced, and he and his younger sister Zlatica moved in with his grandfather, Josip Broz Tito, and his wife Jovanka. After elementary school, he first enrolled in high school but repeated the first grade. He then transferred to a mechanical engineering school, eventually going to a forestry school in Kraljevo. He graduated from the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade.

For a time, he worked as a forester and metal turner, and later he was Tito’s hunting companion and supervisor of his hunting grounds. As a police officer in the Anti-Diversion Squad, he was responsible for his grandfather’s safety until his death on May 4, 1980.
