Denver and Golden State played a spectacular match! Overtime was secured after a 120-120 tie, with the Warriors ultimately winning 137-131. Nikola Jokić missed the shot for the win, which was preceded by a three-pointer from Curry from 10 meters, and Steph ultimately emerged as the hero of the game.
Jokić was also the tragic hero due to his missed three-pointers in the extra five minutes.
The time has finally come for Denver to start the season! The team from Colorado is among the top favorites for the title, and it is understood that Nikola Jokić is on a new MVP quest, but many are wondering how David Adelman’s team will fare after the summer overhaul.
A special focus was on the arrival of Jonas Valančiūnas, with Denver fans hoping that the Lithuanian will bring the right balance and an opportunity for Nikola Jokić to be relieved of some pressure. The first game was an ideal opportunity for a derby, as Denver matched up against Golden State, and the match was preceded by Oklahoma’s overtime victory over Indiana.
Golden State started the game with a 10-0 run, Denver retaliated with a 12-0 run for the turnaround, which was a kind of prelude to a great spectacle.
An even game followed, with Denver dictating the pace and looking for a way to achieve a double-digit lead for a long time; they succeeded toward the end of the second quarter at 58:48, with the maximum lead before halftime being +14, but Curry and his team managed to neutralize it by the end of the third period.
The final quarter began with a 94-94 tie, at which point Nikola Jokić had 16 points and 11 rebounds, just two assists shy of a triple-double.
Denver regained the lead, on the wings of Gordon, who was shooting incredibly well from three-point range. At 109-105 for the Nuggets, Aaron was 9/10 from distance and already had 42 points.
With about two and a half minutes left, Denver looked to be heading for a victory when they went up by +7. Curry ensured the tie, helped by a foul from Christian Braun on a three-point shot, after which Steph tied the score. On the next drive, Curry had a chance to score a layup, but he missed, and Gordon punished him with his tenth three-pointer.
This capped off his most efficient game in his career, giving Denver a 120-117 lead with just 25 seconds left in the game. This only inspired Curry, who hit a three-pointer from 10 meters after a timeout to send the game to overtime.
The Curry-Gordon War
As if Curry and Gordon took this duel personally, they continued their scoring contest. Steph hit another shot from long distance over a defender’s hand, Aaron scored under the basket with a foul, and Jokić followed up with a floater for a new lead for the team from Colorado. However, with two and a half minutes left, Golden State was leading again, this time 128-125.
Jokić then missed two three-pointers and sealed his role as the tragic hero. He even gave up prematurely, with 24 seconds left, not even returning to defense. He just let Curry storm down for a fast break to make it 135-127.
