Podcast host Joe Rogan said that supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump feel betrayed by the involvement of the American military in the conflict with Iran. He emphasized that it contradicts Trump’s promise during the 2024 campaign to avoid new wars.

“It just seems insane considering what he based his campaign on,” Rogan said Tuesday during a podcast episode with author and journalist Michael Shellenberger.

“I mean, that’s why a lot of people feel betrayed, right? He ran on the idea that there would be no more wars, especially these stupid, senseless wars, and now we have one where we can’t even clearly define why we started it.”

Since launching the joint military operation with Israel, the Trump administration has repeatedly outlined the goals of the campaign. These include destroying Iran’s nuclear program, weakening its ballistic missile capabilities and navy, and reducing the regime’s support for regional proxy terrorist groups.

Contrast with the operation in Venezuela

“The Joe Rogan Experience” is one of the most popular podcasts in the United States, and Rogan boosted Trump’s 2024 campaign through lengthy interviews with Trump and Vice President J. D. Vance.

Rogan compared the conflict in Iran with the U.S. military operation in January in which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were captured and brought to the United States to face federal drug trafficking charges.

He said that “nothing really makes sense,” but that Maduro’s arrest was “at least clean.”

“They go in, kidnap him, pull him out,” Rogan said. “This [with Iran] is crazy.”

Fear of World War III

Rogan and Shellenberger also discussed Trump’s possible motives for attacking Iran, with Rogan wondering whether Trump had been influenced by Israel or by “war hawks around him.”

Later in the episode, Rogan pointed to the ongoing conflicts in Gaza Strip and Ukraine, telling Shellenberger:

“When you add [Iran] to that pile, it really feels like there’s a real possibility that we’re heading into World War III.”

White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly defended Trump’s decision to strike Iran in a statement to NBC News.

“President Trump is courageously protecting the United States from the deadly threat posed by the rogue Iranian regime, and that is the clearest example of the ‘America First’ policy,” she said.

Earlier criticism and Trump’s response

Rogan’s criticism on Tuesday was not the first time he has spoken out against policies from Trump’s second term. In a podcast episode in January, Rogan said he could “understand the point of view of people” questioning the tactics of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), adding:

“Are we really going to become the Gestapo? ‘Where are your papers?’ Have we really reached that point?”

Trump responded last month in an interview with NBC News, calling Rogan “a great guy” and saying he had discussed the criticism with him.

“I think he’s a great guy and I think he likes me too,” Trump said. “And you know, whether he likes me isn’t important. What’s happening is that I think we’re doing a phenomenal job, but I don’t think we’re very good at public relations.”
