The Israeli military attacked Iran last night, hitting 20 targets in the country during a five-hour operation, Reuters reported. A series of explosions were heard around Tehran shortly after the Israeli military announced that strikes on military targets in Iran were underway as a retaliatory measure for the Iranian attack on Israel carried out on October 1.
The Iranian agency Tasnim, close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, also reported on the explosions. Prior to the attack, the White House was informed of the Israeli military’s actions. Authorities in Tehran announced that they would respond to the Israeli attack.

A senior official from the U.S. administration told Reuters that Israel struck military locations in Iran as a proportional response to earlier attacks from Tehran, with minimal risk of civilian casualties, according to Tanjug. “This should mark the end of direct exchanges of fire between the two countries,” the U.S. official stated, noting that the U.S. had multiple direct and indirect communication channels with Iran during which it clearly expressed its position.
Iran announced this morning that its air defense system successfully countered the Israeli attacks but acknowledged “limited damage” at some locations. The Iranian air defense reported that Israel targeted military sites in the provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam. The Israeli public service announced this morning that the operation against Iran concluded after three waves of strikes.
